escher like you’ve never seen it before

Okay so this isn’t interactive architecture but I love this piece of work made by Andrew Lipsom, so I thought I’d share it with you.

NEC Corp. said Dec. 7 it has developed a thin, pliable battery that can be charged in about 30 seconds. The new product, 4 centimeters square and 0.3 millimeter thick, can light a light-emitting diode for about 20 minutes after being fully charged.

I can think of hundreds of applications for technology like this and especially coming with the new e-paper and flexible display technologies coming onto the market in the coming few years. Unfortunately it only has a relatively short lifespan but could be ideal for wearable devices.

Cubatron
Cubatron‘s maker claims it to be the “world’s largest true 3D color graphics display” however I know from speaking to someone who specializes in interactive architectural lighting that there is a much bigger one being developed for one of the UK’s most well known Architects. Sorry I’ve got to be so secretive but I’m not sure if its still a secret. Either way what I like about this project is that the whole construction and system is explained right down to the website where he got the ping pong balls

Anyway for the meantime I’ll assume this is the largest 3D color graphics display or at least one of the largest. It is 8x8x8 feet in size. It consists of 729 voxels (3D pixels) arranged in a 9x9x9 matrix, spaced 10 inches apart from each other. Each voxel is a 40mm diameter ball that can be independently set to display a 21-bit RGB color. The entire display can be updated about 30 times per second. The voxels “float” in space so that the viewer can see through the cube and have a view of most of the voxels from any position. Nice to see it on a large human size scale.

A really nice but much smaller although I think more elegant collection of pieces that used a 3D LED Matrix have been created by James Clar.

Allianz Arena designed by Swiss architectural office Herzog & de Meuron for FC Bayern München and TSV 1860 München.

A cascade of colour (white, red, blue) can be projected onto the smooth lozenge-shaped curved exterior made of inflatable ETFE cushions, depending on what team is playing at home. updates are limited to once every 2 minutes to not distract nearby car traffic.

Glowing Places is a concept from an investigation into innovative ways for people to interact with light in public spaces. The plastic seating, embedded with LED (light-emitting diode) strips and sensors, measure the presence of people over time. Both the number of people sitting and the length of time they stay create a ‘social interactive pattern’ that is translated by patented software into lighting effects in the furniture. Many people sitting for brief periods of time result in lighting activity expressing a busy period, whereas one or two people sitting for a longer period trigger mellow lighting.
From RCA

Glowing Places is built on Philips Designs research on the theme of the ‘emotional building’ – a building that responds to the behavior and feelings of its users by visually expressing the activity inside. With this in mind, Glowing Places demonstrates the importance of lighting to signify the changing emotional states.

Those Japanese have done it again. This time a door that senses the approaching shape of an object entering and opens to that shape. This new design entails strips equipped with infrared sensors that open to the approximate shape of the person or object passing through, minimizing entry of dust, pollen, and bugs while keeping precious air-conditioning in.
